Carolina Springs Academy
To Whom It May Concern:
Although our experience with Carolina Springs Academy was short in terms of length of stay, serious problems were still very evident. (9/05)
There were certain promises made for our 16 yr. old son by Carolina Springs that were not fulfilled. One of these issues was the education offered. What we found in our week was that the students were given no formal teaching. They were given text books and assignments to complete; it was literally a self-study program. Teachers were not available for help. A student could sign up for help, but would not receive any true help. They would instead be told to re-do the assignment until correct.
The facilities were not kept in good condition. The dorms were dirty when both my husband and I dropped off our son and picked him up one week later. The bathrooms had no supplies such as toilet paper (seen by father).
The students were given a list of items to bring with them; i.e. sneakers, dress shoes, electric razor, etc. However, when they arrived, many of the items specified were then confiscated and not returned.
Probably the biggest disbelief and potentially dangerous experience was the extraction of our son. We arrived on a Saturday at a time that our son should have been in class. As mentioned earlier, no one was to be found in the school house. Upon finding a “counselor”, we requested our son and all his belongings. He was brought to us with his bag. We then requested his prescriptions for his bi-polar disorder. Again, we were given the medications and off we went. No identification was ever asked of us. The employee had just released a minor to two unidentified adults and gave these people controlled substances. It could have been such a different situation had we not been his parents. What if it had been a custody issue and they released a child to an abusive parent with no parental rights? These people are caring for our children and this example shows how they are lax and irresponsible.
We were lucky; we had not paid any money to Carolina Springs. We had our loan approved but had not signed the loan yet. This is a case of fraud on the part of Carolina Springs on so many levels. The application considered a contract becomes null and void due to the false representation.
