Question 12. Describe your experience of the quality of the therapeutic and medical services offered at the program.
"Permanent scars from cysts that were never drained and a disfigured toe from a severe infection. Both ailments were reported and not treated properly." - Anon, Casa by the Sea
"No medical services except a "nurse" that gave you your meds if you were good. There was a therapist that your parents had to pay extra if you wanted to see them, and the therapist was a program- supporter." - B.B., Ivy Ridge & Tranquility Bay
"The “therapy” component was more harmful than helpful. Dr. Chappuis seemed over loaded and incapable of offering real assistance. I received no medical services during my stay despite seeing blood in my stool daily and having a strange open wound on my forehead that would not heal until after I left." - C.M., Tranquility Bay
"Awful. I was seeing a psychologist for therapy that made fun of us and told us when we graduated we were all going to fall right on our faces, she just said I had PMDD (Post Menstrual Deficit Disorder) where I cry uncontrollably for reasons I don't understand, and I was yelled at by the mamas through my whole program for being a baby. I saw a psychiatrist, who was actually very nice to me, but never really took the time to talk to me but every few weeks (mind you my parents had to pay for all this treatment on top of Casa by the Sea tuition). I was never seen by a doctor, dentist, only for my mental health." - J.C., Casa by the Sea
"I liked my family therapist but didn’t really find her very helpful. I found out later that she wasn’t certified to be a therapist. Medical was again a joke, I remember one time I had a severe ear ache and had a lime green discharge coming out of my ear so I went to see the on site doctor and he sent me off with some cough drops and bed rest. Oh yeah and I remember I had braces before I went in there but they never let me go to an orthodontist until I got to level 3 or 4. One time my top wire disconnected from my braces so then they told me my teeth were considered a weapon and made me sit in R&R until they could get me to the orthodontist. I didn’t even do anything wrong and had to sit in intervention secluded from the rest of my peers. Luckily they didn’t make me lay on the floor face down that time, but it still sucked to be secluded like that, and it was for about 4 days." - A.E., Casa by the Sea
"There was a nurse. That is it. I had a 106 degree fever from salmonella poisoning. Instead of getting any medical treatment I was thrown into a tub of Icy water. I was so shocked because I was kinda in a daze and all of a sudden I'm in a ice bath. I tried fighting them. I was just too weak. There was no Dr, and I don't even know if the nurse was certified." - Anon, Casa by the Sea
"No medical treatment ever once got a stomach issue where I could not eat or stay awake for 3 days. Caught a foot fungus thing where it messed up my ability to walk for months with no treatment." - D.G., Casa by the Sea & Ivy Ridge
"There is nothing to describe because we had none. Any medical services I needed we got told to drink water we even made a joke about it in Casa help my arm is cut off drink water haha. And as far as therapy goes sitting in a group filled with kids giving you feed back to make themselves look better is not what I call therapeutic." - C.L., Casa by the Sea
"I actually liked my therapist quite a bit. There was no medical services- you could go to the nurse for tums or Tylenol, but that was about it. I found out later that my therapist didn’t have the right license to be doing therapy. Some of the therapy processes were just cruel (making one of my group members act like a horse for a week straight and having everyone treat her like an animal). I had about 14 diagnoses when I was there too and had to do many therapy projects surrounding those." - L.W., Cross Creek Manor
"I didn’t ever really get sick, but I did have to get stitches once from Perla. She took me to some clinic, and she stitched me up, a horrible job, and I can still see the scars. I had some skin problems with the long sleeved shirts, when they gave us uniforms, so they gave me a short sleeve collared to wear. At the time, I didn’t know this, but now I know. The reason why my skin reacted with the clothing was the cheap detergent used. I found out after I got back home that I have sensitive skin. So, I guess you can say they provided poor health services." - J.K., Casa by the Sea
"To an extent I would say the private sessions parents would pay for (which were only 30min- 1 hr) were the best. Other than going to the monthly seminars I keep going back to the girls being a main support. I think the program gave us some of the right tools for us to be able to deal and explore what was going on with us internally however I do not think they realistically prepared us. Medical services... All I can say about this is. Unless you were dying.. or you physically looked like something was wrong with you.. it was very difficult to see a doctor." - N.R., Casa by the Sea
"There were no therapeutic services whatsoever. As for the medical services, I had to be seen for an eye infection. They gave me an eye drop of some sort, and it cleared it up after a few days." - A.T., Casa by the Sea
"The medical services were a joke. Comparable to Mexico, which was where we were. The therapeutic aspect of the program was definitely not normal as far as the seminars go. They did have 1 on 1 counseling as well as group counseling such as anger management. I found them to be decent and the staff knowledgeable in their fields. It was just those damn seminars that were very unorthodox in my opinion." - G.A., Casa by the Sea
"Well, like I mentioned earlier in my above statements, there is no medical services provided for people under Level 3, at least none that would be deemed appropriate for minors by any standards. It was complete bullshit. I myself never even tried to seek out treatment from the staff on the facility, they all scared the shit out of me because of their complete negligence, incompetence, and questionable treatments that they proceeded with on children. Please note that some children would stay on Level 1 or 2 for months, even years, therefore allowing them to not be able to have adequate healthcare at the time. I would see it all the time. It was awful. They took away every basic human right you had." - C.A., Casa by the Sea
